Texas Land Commissioner announced that Galveston County, in a partnership with DSW Homes, has successfully completed the construction of 26 single-story new homes in Texas City referred to as The Oaks at Blue Jay Development. Galveston County received a Community Development Block Grant from the Texas General Land Office Community Development & Revitalization program, which was paired with funding from local partners to complete the project. The community ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony was be held in Texas City on Friday, Jan. 27th.
The event was hosted by DSW Homes and highlighted the additional steps the company is taking to encourage community wellness, including the community garden which promotes good nutrition and provides a sense of community for the families. The leadership of DSW Homes went beyond the program requirement of having 51 percent of units set aside for low-to-moderate income families; instead 100 percent of the units in the Oaks at Blue Jay Development have been reserved for low-to-moderate income families.
SMART Family Literacy Inc. and the Barbour’s Chapel Community Development Corp., have teamed up to ofer educational programming for families of the new Blue Jay Drive neighborhood, in Texas City and Galveston County. The two nonprofts offer “parties” for families with young children ages 6 months. to 6-years-old that include free books, as well as hands-on science and art activities. Financial literacy and health and nutrition classes for all ages will be available, and there even will be vegetable garden classes to help residents in the Blue Jay Drive neighborhood grow their own food.
